In 1959, aged 20, he attested into the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management. The book catalogues his leopard control work in the Matopos National Park and his elephant hunting training out of Main Camp, Hwange National Park. By January 1961 he had successfully hunted 20 leopards, 18 elephants, three buffaloes, a hippo and a lion. He had by then demonstrated his aptitude for big game hunting and was considered to be sufficiently competent to hunt big game animals unaccompanied.
